A Thirst For Getting Lost

Elephants

In my line of work, I am to promote the quintessential elephant experience.   "You can ride elephants in the northern part of Thailand.  You can watch them kick soccer balls and toot on harmonicas. You can even take an elephant painting, which is painted by an elephant, home with you as your prized souvenir."   I ate into the idea as much as I sold it for years, but something about it never sat correctly with me.   As time went on, I realized that I could no longer enjoy those jungle rides or stadium filled shows. These majestic creatures helped shape a nation - many nations within the region for that matter-  and for that I am grateful.  I owe them more than a few bananas and strips of sugar cane. I owe them a voice and my continued actions for their ethical treatment and care.

Those eyes.... My heart..
